What is generic semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist originally developed by Novo Nordisk under the brand name Ozempic. It works by mimicking a natural hormone that stimulates insulin release, suppresses glucagon, and slows gastric emptying, together lowering blood glucose levels.

Generic semaglutide contains the same active ingredient, same dosage form, and same strength as the brand-name product. Health Canada's approval confirms bioequivalence, meaning the generics perform the same way in the body as Ozempic.
