Enbrel (Etanercept)

Enbrel® (Etanercept) is a biologic medication approved for the treatment of several chronic inflammatory conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and plaque psoriasis. Enbrel works by targeting and inhibiting the tumor necrosis factor (TNF), a protein in the body that contributes to inflammation and immune system responses.

Why Choose Enbrel (Etanercept)?

  • Reduces Inflammation: Helps decrease the level of systemic inflammation, providing relief from pain and swelling.
  • Slows Disease Progression: May prevent further joint damage in rheumatoid arthritis and other diseases.
  • Improves Physical Function: Enhances quality of life by improving mobility and decreasing pain.
  • Treats Skin Conditions: Effective in reducing the symptoms and appearance of moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

How to Use Enbrel (Etanercept)?

  • Rotate injection sites: Common injection sites include the thighs, abdomen, and upper arms. Avoid areas where the skin is tender, bruised, red, or hard.
  • Clean the injection site: Use an alcohol swab to clean the skin where the injection will be administered. Allow the area to air dry.
  • Remove cap: Take off the cap from the syringe or autoinjector, taking care not to touch the needle.
  • Inject the medication: For a syringe, pinch the skin lightly and insert the needle at about a 45-degree angle. For an autoinjector, place it flat against the skin and press down until it triggers.
  • Press the plunger: If using a syringe, gently push the plunger down. Hold the autoinjector in place until all medication is injected.
  • Withdraw needle: Remove the needle or autoinjector and apply light pressure to the site with a gauze pad if necessary. Do not rub the injection site.
  • Dispose of properly: Place used needles, syringes, and autoinjectors in an FDA-approved sharps disposal container immediately after use. Do not throw them in the trash.

Important Safety Information about Enbrel

  • Check the label: Ensure the medication has not expired and it is the correct dose as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Inspect the solution: Enbrel should be clear and colorless to slightly yellow. Do not use it if the solution is cloudy, discolored, or has particles in it.
  • Allow it to reach room temperature: If stored in the refrigerator, allow the prefilled syringe or autoinjector to sit at room temperature for about 15 to 30 minutes before use. Do not warm it in any other way (e.g., do not warm it in a microwave or hot water).
  • Allergic Reactions: Some patients have had severe allergic reactions to the active or inactive components of Enbrel. Immediate medical attention is required if symptoms of a serious allergic reaction occur.
  • Vaccinations: Discuss with your healthcare provider before receiving any vaccines. Certain vaccines may not be advisable.
