ATROVENT INHALATION SOLUTION (IPRATROPIUM BROMIDE)
Overview
Atrovent Inhalation Solution (Ipratropium Bromide) is a prescription based oral inhalation solution drug. It is used to treat patients with lung diseases like Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Bronchitis and Emphysema. It also helps to treat airflow blockages in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Atrovent is the brand name of the drug, whereas Ipratropium Bromide is the generic name.
How It Works
This drug contains an active ingredient called Ipratropium Bromide. It belongs to a class of drugs called anticholinergic bronchodilators. There are bronchial tubes in the lungs through which air passes. When it is inhaled orally, it helps to relax the muscles around the tubes. This helps to open up the tubes so that the patient can breathe easily. Unlike other drugs, it starts acting quickly. However, it takes about 2 hours to reach the highest potential.
Dosage
- The dosage for Asthma:
- Dosage for Adults and 12 years or older children: Use 500 mcg in a nebulizer, 3 to 4 times a day (gap of 6 to 8 hours) as needed.
- Necessary dosage for 5 to 12 years of children: Use 125 to 250 mcg in a nebulizer. Use at an interval of 4 to 6 hours as a requirement. To be taken 3-4 times every day.
- Dosage for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease:
- The dosage for adults and 12 years or older children: 250 to 500 mcg to be used in a nebulizer, 3 to 4 times a day (gap of 6 to 8 hours) as needed.
Common Side Effects
- Serious Side Effects:
- Allergic reaction
- Difficulty breathing
- Heart palpitations
- Pounding Heartbeat
- Swelling of throat
- Red eyes
- Swelling of eyes
- Blurred vision
- Painful urination
- Common Side Effects:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Sore Throat
- Cough
- Nausea or Vomiting
- Constipation Diarrhea
These are some side effects, consequently. However, if you notice anything serious, call for immediate medical help.
How to Take This Medication
- Please take it as and when prescribed by the doctor.
- Use it with a nebulizer. Please do not take it directly.
- Don’t use the bottle of the solution after 28 days of use.
- You can use it as a concentrate or dilute it.
- The diluted solution should be freshly prepared.
- Dilute the solution using saline water.
- How to use the nebulizer:
- Prepare your nebulizer as per the directions.
- Add the solution drops with the help of a dropper
- Add saline solution if needed.
- Shake well to mix the solution.
- Connect the tube, adjust the mask as per given instructions.
- Breathe as advised by the doctor.
- Clean after use.
- Avoid taking a double dosage, in case you miss one.
- If you overdose, get immediate medical help.
